On this day in...

1956 - Mayor David L. Lawrence officiated at a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of demolition for the redevelopment of Pittsburgh's Lower Hill District neighborhood to make way for the Civic Arena. 80 city blocks, or 100 acres, were cleared and 8,000 residents, or one-fifth of the Hill's population at the time, were relocated to make way for the Civic Arena development project.

2007 - Sidney Crosby was named team captain of the Penguins and became the youngest captain in NHL history.

2009 - Detroit beat Pittsburgh 3-1 to take a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final.
